The Coolest Wizarding Careers
Congratulations! You have taken your O.W.L.S. and now you are ready to choose a career. Wizarding students have the opportunity to choose careers based on their test scores, personalities, and personal preferences. Wizards can take a variety of career paths. From hunting dark witches and wizards to studying muggles, from teaching to healing, the world is at your fingertips. Grab your magic wand and discover a few of the coolest careers in the magical world.
Auror - Dark Wizard Catcher
Course Dumbledore trusts you,” growled Moody. “He’s a trusting man, isn’t he? Believes in second chances. But me — I say there are spots that don’t come off, Snape. Spots that never come off, d’you know what I mean?” - Alastor Moody
If fighting crimes, catching bad guys, and nabbing dark wizards is up your alley, you may want to be an auror. As a wizard’s intense version of the secret service, you will be armed with a wand and a great knowledge of defense against the dark arts. Mix in a healthy dose of potions, charms, and spells so that you are fully able to defend yourself against spells that may come your way. To be an auror, you cannot be afraid of danger. You fight for good over evil. You are not afraid to take down the dark wizards who stand in your way. What better aurors to look up to than Alastor Moody and Nymphadora Tonks!
Magizoologist
“See, they're currently in alien terrain, surrounded by millions of the most vicious creatures on the planet. Humans.” - Newt Scamander
“The trick to any beast is knowing how to calm ‘em.” - Rubeus Hagrid
For those of you who love all magical creatures, a career in magizoology could be in order. One must have a passion for studying and caring for animals and creatures. If this sounds like you, you could take Newt Scamander’s path: travel the world, study fascinating beasts, and write about them. Or, follow Hagrid’s footsteps and seek out a position as a professor to teach the care of magical creatures to young minds. Keeping a few as pets is a perk of the job.
Wandmaker
“The wand chooses the wizard, that much has always been clear to those of us who have studied wandlore.” - Mr. Ollivander
Magic wands are handcrafted from special types of wood. Each has a core, a substance that is usually from a magical creature such as a phoenix feather, unicorn tail, or dragon heartstring. A deep understanding of the cores, their characteristics, the wood, and how each of the pieces work together and complement one another is crucial for a wandmaker. This is a rare and fascinating skill. Great wandmakers like Mr. Ollivander are beloved and highly sought out for their talent, skill, and knowledge.
Misuse of Muggle Artifacts
“Now, Harry, you must know all about Muggles. Tell me, what exactly is the function of a rubber duck?” - Arthur Weasley
Perhaps you are as intrigued by muggles and their “odd” belongings as Arthur Weasley. If you are kind-hearted and curious by nature as Mr. Weasley, you may want to consider a job with the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. Track wizards and confiscate muggle items that are not being used properly. Or, sneak a few home and tinker with them yourself in private.
The Ministry of Magic is full of careers if you are looking to make a difference or to affect wizarding policies. Maybe you will even become the Minister of Magic one day.
School Headmaster
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” - Albus Dumbledore
For a more traditional, yet noble career, you can study education and shape young minds. To be the headmaster of the best wizarding school, you must first become a professor. Choose your field of speciality wisely and based on your own talents and professions. Are you good at transfiguration? Do you have a green thumb? Perhaps you want to teach young wizards how to battle the dark arts, how to properly use their wands, or how to mix an array of interesting potions. Spend years educating students and preparing them to be the leaders of tomorrow. With proper skill, leadership, and teaching ability, you may just find yourself in the headmaster chair.
