There is time for a last minute trip or getaway. Grab your magic wand, go on an adventure and explore these magical or wizarding destinations across the United States!
For a day trip and the thrill of the game...A wizarding themed escape room
For a night out or daytime adventure with friends, escape rooms have become the new trend. However, now there is a new twist. Try a witchcraft or Harry Potter themed escape room. Bring your magic wand and keep your wits about you. Spells, potions and intellect will be needed to find your way out of these escape rooms. Potter themed escape rooms are available throughout the United States in Los Angeles, California; Novi, Michigan; St. Paul, Minnesota; Buffalo, New York; Conshohocken Pennsylvania; and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Each of these escape rooms is conveniently located in or near a city full of culture, museums and history if you wish to go exploring before or after your wizarding experience.
For a paranormal experience...Savannah, GA
Known as one of the most haunted places in the United States, Savannah is a giant graveyard. Between family feuds, the Civil War, and disease, deaths mounted in the 18th-20th centuries. Many people were buried in unmarked graves that were then built over. Go on a ghost tour. Visit the historical, beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery. Enjoy the beauty of nature with a walk through Forsyth Park or Johnson Square. Stop by the Mercer-Williams House, straight out of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Dine with ghosts at the Olde Pink House Restaurant.
Savannah is also home to Hoodoo practiced by the Geechee people, not to be confused with Gullah. The Geechee have a deep spirituality believing in ghosts and magic cast by potions, charms and amulets. Discover more about Hoodoo and the Geechee through a tour of Savannah. Before leaving, be sure to do some shopping. Stop by Cosmic Corner or another spiritual shop for your supplies and resources.
For a New Age experience...Seattle, Washington
Seattle is a mix of history, culture and the more modern. Your trip to the Pacific Northwest can include a blend of museums, nature and shopping. To feed your spiritual soul, Seattle is a growing area for witchcraft. Although locals can sign up for witch school, those visiting can schedule a yoga class, psychic reading, energy healing or herbal medication at Mother Earth Medicine. Stop by The Vajra for a metaphysical experience as you pick up supplies or meet with astrologers, tarot readers and practitioners. While in Seattle, stop by the Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington for a taste of literature and architecture. This library bears a striking resemblance to Hogwarts. To extend your trip, a number of day trips and excursions are available from Seattle — whether you want to go hiking, biking or mountain climbing or to check out the beach, lighthouses, or waterfalls. Or, if you are also a Twilight fan, check out the Olympic Peninsula.
For a trip to the Big Apple...New York, NY
New York City has no shortage of tourist sites, restaurants and places to visit. However, if you are looking for something new, check out a potion making class at The Cauldron. This gastropub offers a British-inspired restaurant and cocktail experience on the first floor and immersive potion experience complete with a magic wand on the second. Though not Harry Potter themed but for your spiritual experience, stop by Enchantments to pick up your witchcraft supplies. You can also ask about a reading if you seek spiritual or practical guidance. Explore the magic of the Met through a wizard themed scavenger hunt. Use Harry Potter references to search for and discover works of art. Of course, no trip to NYC would be complete without tickets to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway.
For the history buff...Salem, Massachusetts
Step back into 1692. Magic and witchcraft were not always accepted, but rather unknown concepts to be feared. Although the Salem Witch Trials were a dark part of history, it does not hurt to remember the result when people incite fear against differences. Take a walk through the Salem Witch Museum to freshen up on the history of the trials. Visit the dungeons and jail grounds to see how the accused spent their last days. Be part of the jury in Cry Innocent: The People Versus Bridget Bishop, a play reliving the trial of an accused witch. Don’t forget to stop by the Salem Witch Trial Memorial and/or the Witchcraft Victims’ Memorial to remember those who were senselessly lost during the hysteria against witchcraft. Salem is full of moving, historical sites to see and may not be for the faint of heart.
For those looking for something darker...New Orleans, Louisiana
Slytherins are not the only ones who practice the dark arts. Immerse yourself in the supernatural. New Orleans is steeped in history with stories of voodoo, magic, vampires, ghosts and more. For a quick step into history, visit the French Quarter to see the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum. Check out Marie Laveau’s tomb to pay your respects to the queen of voodoo. For a closeup look at the supernatural, schedule a ghost hunt or cemetery tour with Bloody Mary’s Tours. Bloody Mary’s also offers a voodoo academy with seances and psychic readings. Before you leave, stop by one of the many shops to pick up your own supply of books, candles, crystals, oils, herbs and more.
The world of witchcraft and wizardry is not something new. The history is deep, and at times, dark. Take a step back in time or into a new adventure this summer by visiting a new world of sorcery, witchcraft, or the supernatural. Just don’t forget your magic wand!
