Bring the magic of the wizarding world of Harry Potter into your home and your next party. One of the best things about Harry Potter is that it spans generations. The books, movies, games, and activities excite the witch or wizard inside each of us. Parties and activities can be geared toward fans of any age. So grab your Hogwarts robe, your Wand Shoppe magic wand, and your fellow Harry Potter friends and get the party started. Here are a few of our favorite games and activities for your next Harry Potter-themed party.
Set the Mood
No party can start without the proper invitations. Invite your guests in style with their very own Hogwarts acceptance letters. Create your own or try one of the templates we found here. Then, let the magic begin.
This is self-explanatory, but any Harry Potter party is a great time to dress in your best cosplay outfit. There is no shortage of options available. Dress as your favorite character or try something new. Grab your robe, your house scarf or tie, and your favorite magic wand to get into the right mood.
Are you brave, ambitious, wise, or loyal? Sort your guests into their appropriate Hogwarts houses—Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Guests could simply draw a card with a house name or have them complete a quiz to discover their appropriate houses. Have a little fun and award House points to the best dressed guests.
Games and Activities
Time for a game of Quidditch. How’s your aim? Tabletop quidditch pong is a Hogwarts version of pong that can easily be played without alcohol so it is suitable for all ages. For this game, you must get your golden snitch (gold ping pong ball) through a quidditch hoop and into a cup in order to score. Remember, House points are on the line here. Make the game yourself using hangers or sewing circles and the directions found here.
If the weather is cooperating, take your athletic skills outside. Make a quidditch pitch by nailing hula hoops to yard stakes and spray painting them gold. Use oversized balls for bludgers, a somewhat deflated ball for a quaffle, and a spray painted ping pong ball for a snitch. Grab your broomsticks and let the games begin!
Who really has the most knowledge about the world of Harry Potter? Do you know every last detail? Test your knowledge of the dark arts, Hogwarts, spells and potions, magical objects, people, and creatures. With 1800 questions, even the smartest wizard could be stumped. Put your memory to the test with Trivial Pursuit World of Harry Potter Ultimate Edition.
“You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making.” Potion-making requires a delicate touch, attention to detail, and the ability to follow directions. This can be a fun, interactive part of your party. Depending on the age ranges, potions can be kid-friendly with Harry Potter slime or exploding soap and burning basilisk skin.
For adults, pre-make potions and give your guests a list of ingredients. Their job is to match the appropriate ingredient list to the proper potion and earn House points. Adults can also concoct their own potions (drinks) using set ingredients.
Defense Against the Dark Arts - Wizard Duel
Remember the duel between Harry and Draco in The Chamber of Secrets? Same idea, but this time no real snakes should shoot out of your wands. Two people duel and reaction time is key. The first to use his/her defensive or offensive spells wins. This is a great time to practice your wand movements and your disarming, shield, and confundus spells.
Looking to liven things up? Hopefully your dress robes don’t look or smell like Ron’s Great Aunt Tessie. Grab your partner and turn your dance floor into your own Yule Ball. Play your favorite Harry Potter soundtrack, add some drinks and good food, and soon your guests will be ready to “Do the Hippogriff”.
Wind things down with a classic game of wizard chess. Can you play the best game of wizard chess that Hogwarts has ever seen? This board game should be a bit safer than the versions Harry, Ron, and Hermione played. Get your own wizard chess set here.
You are going to want photos to remember your magical party. If you are artistic and have the time, make your own props with markers, poster board, and scissors. If you are pressed for time, check Etsy or Amazon for photo frames, Harry Potter glasses, character masks, and additional photo booth props.
The possibilities are endless for a magical Harry Potter party. Additional decorations, food and drinks, games, and more ideas can be found on Pinterest and Etsy.
